Significance Metaphor is one type of figurative language that helps readers develop a deeper understanding of the text. Poets use metaphors to make the poems more creative, interesting and entertaining. By studying this, students can develope an appreciation for the use of language.

Simile

Term - Simile

Def - Compare two things using "like, as, same as"

Example

My mom is like an angel

Significance - Metaphor help comparing easier and have a better idea.

Interpretation

Term - Interpretation

Definition - The analyst/ explanation of art like poems and a story/literature

Example
You're a dependable source of comfort;
You're my cushion when I fall.
You help in times of trouble;
You support me whenever I call.
 I love you more than you know;
You have my total respect.
 If I had my choice of mothers,
You'd be the one I'd select.
Interpretation: The poem shows the love of the poet for his or her mother. 


Significance - Show understanding of poems. Help the readers to have a deeper understanding of the poems 

Personification

Term - Personification

Def: A metaphor that makes a non human object, describe them acting like human being

Example - In the movie "Cars" cars don't actually talk or have feeling.  But in this movie, the director made them really human being. Like falling in love, feeling pity toward others... etc

Significance - It makes things more lively. Give more idea, image of what the object might look like.

Extended Metaphor

Term - Extended Metaphor 

Definition - An extended metaphor is a type of metaphor. Extended metaphors are used to compare two unlike things that continues throughout a series of lines in poems.

Example 

Lightning-Monkey moves like a flash
Leaping fast across the trees
Loud as thunder that strikes at night
Falling down like a bright sparkle
The Lightning-Monkey will go into a rage
And strike you down.

Significance - Can be more entertain, more relative and easy to imagine. Increase imagination. 

Tone

Definition

The attitude toward the subjects, characters, or audience implied in poems created by the poets.It can vary. Depending on what kind of mood the author of the poem is trying to set. From mellow, to sorrowful, to angry, to full of angst.

Nigahiga have over 3 millions subscribers on YouTube because he uses the tone of his voice up and down, high pitch or low pitch. 

Like one of his newest video on Rebecca Black Friday, he uses his tone really good. 

Significance - Can express the feeling more and entertain people more. The message reach to the audience more.  

Rhythm

Definition

Rhythm is the beat of music in poems. It's the regular repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables.


Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And Summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd:
But thy eternal Summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

 Rhythm is significant in poetry because poetry is emotionally charged and intense. Rhythm gives the poem melodies and tunes which makes the poem more intersting to read. It also helps readers concentrate more into the poem.
